Karnataka: Lokayukta post vacant since 2011, more than 4,500 cases pending

Has the Karnataka Lokayukta been
rendered toothless by the BJP state
government? Since Justice Shivraj
Patil stepped down in September
2011, the state government has
left the post of the anti-corruption
watchdog vacant. Since then,
nearly 1200 new cases have been
filed, but only two have been
disposed of. Overall, there are
more than 4,500 cases pending.
B Yoginath, Registrar, Karnataka
Lokayukta, says that as far as the
Lokayukta is concerned, "all
complaints and allegations
according to the statute" will have
to be cleared by the Lokayukta
himself/herself.
