Despite the Government's claims that it'll take
action to strengthen laws on rape, negligence
and indifference continues to hound the
victims. In Patiala, an 18-year-old girl was
driven to suicide, 44 days after she was
gangraped, because the police didn't arrest the
suspects. It was only after her death, that the
Punjab Police swung into action And arrested
the alleged rapists Balwinder Singh, Gurpreet
Singh and a woman Shinderpal Kaur who helped
them. The police also sacked two officers
including a DSP and suspended an Assistant Sub
Inspector. A senior officer has been deputed to
investigate why the suspects were not
arrested for so long.
