Amid the call for strong and immediate justice
against the culprits of such attacks, there have
been calls for the Shariah form of justice, with
stiff policing and instant punishment.
Parliamentarians have called for rape to be
treated as attempted murder, some even
demanding the death penalty. Activists too have
called for a minimum mandatory sentence for
rape. But the issue remains, just what these
fast track courts can actually achieve in terms
of ensuring justice. Won't the death penalty
actually end up delaying justice given the
number of prisoners on death row. And even if
punishment is given out quickly, just how
strong will it end up being?
