America's largest subway system began to shut down on Saturday as the first rain from the storm fell on Manhattan. It was the first time the city has shut down the entire subway system because of a natural disaster. The five main New York-area airports - La Guardia, John F. Kennedy and Newark, plus two smaller ones - waved in their last arriving flights around noon. Professional sports events were postponed and Broadway theatres were dark. More 370-thousand people in flood-prone areas have been told to get out ahead of the storm, the first time such an evacuation order was issued for the city. For all the concern, there were early signs that the storm might not be as bad as feared.
