Hyderabad (India) Facebook Arrests | IT act abused again

The arrest and subsequent
release of PUCL activist has
triggered a row over the efficacy of
section 66A of the IT act under
which such arrests are made.
The activist was held for her Facebook posts on Former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Rosaiah and Cong MLA Krishna Kumar. While the MLA claims that his reputation has been damaged by the posts, the arrest has endangered the fundamental right of freedom of speech.

Section 66A of the IT Act reads:
"Any person sending by any means
of a computer resource any information that is grossly offensive or has a menacing character, shall be punished with imprisonment for a term of 3 years and with fine.

In other words, a person can be
sent to jail for 3 years for sending
an email or other electronic message that "causes annoyance or inconvenience to any body. (Social Network Controversy, Social Media
